This is where Canadian folk give thanks for their many blessings like 7 months of snow & Rob Ford. It's also a great way to meet some new people before our huge Halloween party at the end of October.

Bring your own drinks and a picnic item to share. Everyone welcome so feel free to bring non-Canadians. If you've got a great dish then go for it but don't stress about bringing anything gourmet... a bag of chips also counts!!

Rushcutters Bay Park has free parking, a kiosk w washrooms and is about a 10 minute walk from both Kings Cross Station and Edgecliff Station. Very pet friendly. We'll try to find somewhere with shade that's not too far from the kiosk.

Look for a Canadian Flag and/or Red & White Hockey Jerseys.

Back by very popular demand, one of our best events for making new friends!

Join 300+ of our friends of friends from Sydney Americans, Network Canada, Sydney Canadians and the Hyde-Park-Crosstraining-Bootcamp Group for drinks after work while watching the first game of the NFL season. It doesn't matter whether you like football, as long as you like Friday drinks and meeting friends of friends. It's one of our best social events of the year.

Be sure to wear a shirt/hat of your favourite football team (NFL, CFL or college) so that others know where you're from (which makes it super easy to meet new people). See one of the volunteers when you arrive to grab a name tag and get introduced around.

The game - between the Super Bowl champions and their rivals - is a recorded time delay from earlier that morning so be sure to avoid seeing the score or telling anyone if you've heard what happens.

Check out pics from last year's party!

CINCO DE MAYO is a Mexican holiday that has become an honoured North American celebtration. As luck would have it, it coincides with the greatest holiday ever celebrated outside of our Milky Way - MAY THE 4th BE WITH YOU! So once again we're combining the 2 to create a unique night that holds true to Mexican tradition while at the same time lets others get their Wookies on. So...

Chicos,

~ We must stand with our Mexican neighbours and pay tribute not only to the 155th anniversary of the heroic Battle of Puebla, but to the nation that has blessed us with tequila, tacos and vague-but-blissful memories of our Reading Weeks/Spring Breaks. ~

~ Miliones de gringos all across North America will celebrate of our proclaimed Mexican nacional holiday as an excuse to tip back a few margaritas or even partake in tequila body shots. ~

~ Last year’s event was awesome, but this year we’re REALLY taking it to another galaxy.~

~ We’re starting things off from 7pm with some fun & games, great drink specials and very tasty Mexican food.  The Mariachis will show up as will our beloved Latino DJ's and Garage House DJ's which is when the party really kicks into hyperdrive! ~

~ Make sure you wear a costume as the more you dress-up, the more fun you'll have. Prizes for best dressed Mexican, Star Wars or combined costumes.~

Check back here or Facebook for any updates.

Let's do it again, por favor!

besame,

red de Canada

ABOUT THE FOOD
It's 100% AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD!!! No, we’re not joking. We’ve actually got Mexican chef, Cisco, on the night making only authentic Mexican food. Raised in California, he’s the first of his family born outside Mexico but he keeps the family tradition alive through his passion for Mexican food and culture. In fact, most of the recipes on the night will be his late grandmother’s including traditional nixtamal corn tortillas which we'll be using for authentic tacos! And if that’s not cool enough, his father was part of the first group to ever celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the US in the 1960’s. And if that’s still not cool enough, he’s a hockey player and a fan of the Canucks (and the Kings but we'll forgive that). He only cooks from the heart and is doing this purely as a favour to us to make sure we get truly traditional Mexican food on the night. Thanks in advance Cisco…you’re awesome and you’ve already done your family proud.

Back by popular demand, join 300+ of our friends of friends from Sydney Expat Americans (now Sydney Americans), Network Canada, Sydney Canadians and the Hyde-Park-Crosstraining-Bo otcamp for drinks after work while watching the first game of the NFL season.

See Ben, Jonathan, or one of the volunteers when you arrive to grab a name tag and get introduced around.

The game - between the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos and the Carolina Pantherss - is a recorded time delay from earlier that morning so be sure to avoid seeing the score or telling anyone if you've heard what happens.

FAQs
1. Why not July 1st which is officially Canada Day? Every year, we do this event on the Saturday before Canada Day. This gives us and the rest of the volunteers a chance to set-up without missing our day jobs, it gives those who commute from outside of Sydney a chance to make it and it lets us have fireworks!
2. What if we don’t want the dinner special? Then just come and party! Plus there’s heaps of other Canadian snacks from REAL poutine to perogies to pancakes.
3. Are there really Caesar’s? Yes but don’t expect them to last all night. We managed to import well over 200 litres of Clamato Juice! Sounds like a lot but not when there’s thousands of people!!! ALL Caesar's will be made to the traditional Canadian recipe and all bartenders have already been educated and trained in the art.
4. Are there really Canadian beers? Yes. There's actually 6 different Canadian beers including big sellers like Molson Canadian, Moosehead & Kokanee as well as a few boutiques like the a Dieu du Ciel Cocao & Vanilla Stout...yum
5. Can we reserve tables for the dinner specialsl? Yes, limited seats can be booked plus other seating that's first come-first serve plus we're adding more "standing tables" this year during the early parts so everyone can get into the amazing Canadian food. There's hundreds of seats but it's looking like a busy night so get in early to avoid disappointment. Book here: https:// www.thekeystonegroup.com.au /book-now/
6. Is there a door list? Nope. Just show up. It gets busy so the earlier you show up the better to avoid any line-ups (oops I mean queues). It's a huge space!
7. Can we use Cargo's outdoor spaces? YES! They aren't reall outdoor spaces as they're covered and have rows and rows of ceiling heaters and wind protection so no rain or cold will stop us! We're Canadians so it wouldn't stop us anyway.
8. Tips for avoiding or reducing the cover charge: show up before 6:00pm and it's FREE. If you can't make it early, make sure you dress "Canadian" and it'll be 1/2 price! Putting on a red shirt & a cap isn't enough but a red shirt & white pants for example should work. Canadian University stuff is also acceptable but again, just showing up with a t-shirt won't convince the bouncers.
9. Is the food really gonna taste like it does in Canada? Check out the food tasting posts. So far it's been pretty authentic and we work hard to get it right. We truck in 50 pounds of real cheese curd for poutine for example! We'll have hand-made perogies, real poutine, beaver-tails, Caesars, fatboy burgers, honey-dill chicken fingers and lots of other goodies. We got a huge amount of compliments on the food last year and we're doing even more this year!
10. Coat Check - yes there will be a coat check available on the night!

So...

Chicos,

~ We must stand with our Mexican neighbours and pay tribute not only to the 154th anniversary of the heroic Battle of Puebla, but to the nation that has blessed us with tequila, tacos and vague-but-blissful memories of our Reading Weeks/Spring Breaks.

The Mariachis will show up as will our beloved Latino DJ's which is when the party really kicks into hyperdrive! ~

~ Make sure you wear a costume as the more you dress-up, the more fun you'll have. Prizes for best dressed Mexican, Star Wars or combined costumes.~

~ Canadians be proud, according to Wikipedia "In 2011, the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day [i.e. May the 4th be with you] took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema."~

Check back here or Facebook for any updates.

Let's do it again, por favor!

besame,

THE VENUE
We’ve got an ICONIC venue for our party this year…and it’s all ours exclusively!!! The Imperial in Newtown is part of Sydney’s cultural history and identity. It’s where the famous drag scene from Priscilla was filmed. It’s a venue that flaunts acceptance and equality for everyone no matter if you’re Gringo or Jedi. If you like dancing, this will be your place. And seriously, can you get a better name for a Star Wars party than the "Imperial"???

The Imperial Hotel is in a primo location on the border of Newtown and up-and-coming Erskineville – it’s a 300m walk from 3 train stations - Newtown Station, Erskineville Station or MacDonaldtown Station. It’s also a deceivingly large venue designed for dance, dance, dancing the night away... with margaritas, tacos and wookies.\

WORLD'S FIRST
You’re going to see the world’s very first Star Wars Mexican DRAG SHOW!! Starring one of Australia’s best drag queens, Krystal Kleer and backed by some incredible dancers, imagine Obi Juan Kenobi and his intergalactic travels “south of the border”! Warning, if you’ve never seen a drag show in Sydney, they can be VERY CHEEKY…but this one is 100% all in good fun!!!

ABOUT THE FOOD
Cantina Movil has been truckin’ since Dec 2011 and continues to attract an ever-growing legion of Amigos with its delicioso Mexican fare.

Cantina's tacos, nachos and burritos are served with a selection of succulent and slow-roasted meat fillings – Chipotle Beef, Achiote Chicken, Chilorio Pork and rounded out with Autentico Pinto Beans.

Evoking a fiesta wherever they roam Cantina will be popping up for this year’s Cinco de Mayo Star Wars Fiesta.

Yet another excuse for drinks....we're getting together to pretend to watch football while mingling with North American friends over a few drinks.

New England Patriots vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

One of our best events for making new friends! Back by popular demand, join 300+ of our friends of friends from Sydney Expat Americans (now Sydney Americans), Network Canada, Sydney Canadians and the Hyde-Park-Crosstraining-Bo otcamp for drinks after work while watching the first game of the NFL season.

See Ben, Jonathan, or one of the volunteers when you arrive to grab a name tag and get introduced around.

The game - between the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots and their AFC Rival Pittsburg Steelers - is a recorded time delay from earlier that morning so be sure to avoid seeing the score or telling anyone if you've heard what happens.

FAQ's
1. Are there vegetarian dinner options in the $25 dinner/drink deal? Yes.
2. What if we don’t want the dinner special? Then just come and party! Plus there’s heaps of other Canadian snacks from REAL poutine to perogies to pancakes.
3. Are there really Caesar’s? Yes but don’t expect them to last all night. We managed to import well over 300 litres of Clamato Juice! Sounds like a lot but not when there’s thousands of people!!! ALL Caesar's will be made to the traditional Canadian recipe and all bartenders have already been educated and trained in the art.
4. What’s Kokanee Beer? It's glacier fresh and the number 1 selling beer in British Columbia.
5. What's St Ambroise? It's one of the coolest microbreweries in Quebec with crazy, yummy, brews.
6. Remember, Trivia starts at 5pm. There will be a bonus trivia question on the night and only those who read this will know that the answer is "Like Sydney Canadians on Facebook" or "Take off you hoser" (either one is acceptable)
7. Can we reserve tables for the dinner specialsl? Yes, limited seats that can be booked plus plenty of other seating that's first come-first serve and we're adding more "standing tables" this year during the early parts so everyone can get into the amazing Canadian food. There's hundreds of seats but it's looking like a busy night so get in early to avoid disappointment. Call Hard Rock on 9280 0077 and mention Canada Day as they normally don't take bookings!
8. Is there a door list? Nope. Just show up. It gets busy so the earlier you show up the better to avoid any line-ups (oops I mean queues). It's a huge space with room to expand into adjoining venues if required.
9. Tips for avoiding the cover charge: show up before 6:00pm. If you can't make it early, make sure you dress "Canadian"! Putting on a red shirt isn't enough but a red shirt & white pants for example should work. Canadian University stuff is also acceptable but again, just showing up with a t-shirt won't convince the bouncers.
10. Is the food really gonna taste like it does in Canada? We've got a Canadian (actually 1/2 Canadian) chef and we spend a lot of time getting things as close as we can. Last year we had amazingly authentic perogies, poutine, beaver-tails, Caesars, fatboy burgers, honey-dill chicken fingers and lots of other goodies. We got a huge amount of compliments on the food last year and we're doing even more this year!

This is the best way to meet fellow young professionals before our huge Canada Day and 4th of July parties!

At this smaller event (under 150 people), you'll be introduced around to a great mix of North Americans, Australians and International Expats from all over.

Plus there'll be cheap drinks (inc $5 beer specials & $15 burger+fries+beer/wine til 8:30pm) while we watch Game 2 of the famous State of Origin rugby match between NSW vs. QLD.

So come join a fun group of International Bootcampers and North American Expats, who also have no freakin' clue what the Rugby League State of Origin is--this is a social drinks event--nobody knows what's going on ;-)

We've exclusively reserved the entire 80 Proof bar, which is downstairs in the basement under Cheers Bar. Look for the American & Canadian flags and see the organisers when you arrive to grab a name tag and get introduced around. Everyone all of 80 Proof will be with the group so it's easy/comfortable to strike up a conversation with anyone.

What is the State of Origin?
Most of the world plays Rugby Union, but Australia has another version called Rugby League and the State of Origin is more or less an All-Star series between players who were born (origin) in NSW vs. those born in QLD.

So...

Chicos,

~ We must stand with our Mexican neighbours and pay tribute not only to the 153rd anniversary of the heroic Battle of Puebla, but to the nation that has blessed us with tequila, tacos and vague-but-blissful memories of our Reading Weeks/Spring Breaks.

Let's do it again, por favor!

besame,

This event usually attracts quite a big & fun crowd and The Morrison have given us the perfect venue for the game. It's right in the heart of the CBD plus they've got TV's throughout including a giant screen in the main bar. They're also adding a breakfast menu for us as well and some "North American" food, lunch deals and beer specials.

Doors open at 8am. Seats are "first in, best dressed" so get there early for the ~10am kickoff. There's also a couple of free lucky door prize draws, one during half time and the other right after the game ends. Just ask for your free raffle ticket at any one of the bars. Game usually goes until around 2pm or so.

For those who think that drinking beer before 10am is uncivilized don't worry, we've also arranged some Bloody Mary's "by the Clock"!! So if you order a Bloody Mary between 8am and 9am it's $8, between 9am and 10am it's $9 and after 10am it stays locked in at $10 for the rest of the day.

And for those who think that football has something to do with soccer, come and see Katy Perry perform during the half-time show. And yes, we'l show the American TV commercials.l

Bring your own drinks and a picnic item to share. Everyone welcome so feel free to bring non-Canadians. I'll bring some Moosehead & Kokanees if some else brings the ice and a bucket!!!

This is the BEST way to meet young professional expats from all over the world in advance of our HUGE Halloween bash. As usual, we're bringing together our Expat American, Canadian, International Bootcampers & their friends.

This will be a smallish event where everyone can meet everyone and enjoy a few drinks in one of Darling Harbour's best kept secrets....the ROOFTOP of Home Nightclub.

So join us for some after an work drink or 2 or 7.

We've got the entire ROOFTOP area. To get there, go to the top level of Cockle Bay Wharf and follow the signs to "L'Aqua" and then keep going past L'Aqua until you get to the end.

Note This event is for ALL young professionals aged 24-35ish (i.e. you don't have to be Canadian or American and you don't need to be a football fan, but you've got to have fun!). It's a friends of friends event so a great place to meet other young & fun professionals...but no spoilers please! For the non-Canucks/Yanks out there, football = gridiron.

One of our best events for making new friends! Back by popular demand, join 300+ of our friends of friends for drinks after work while watching the first game of the NFL season.

It doesn't matter whether you like football, as long as you like Friday drinks and meeting friends of friends. It's one of our best social events of the year. Be sure to wear a shirt/hat of your favourite football team (NFL or college) so that others know where you're from (which makes it super easy to meet new people).

The game - between the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers - is a recorded time delay from earlier that morning so be sure to avoid seeing the score or telling anyone if you've heard what happens.

FAQ's
We managed to import well over 100 litres of Clamato Juice! Sounds like a lot but not when there’s hundreds or even thousands of people!!! ALL Caesar's will be made to the traditional Canadian recipe and all bartenders have already been educated and trained in the art.
4. What’s Kokanee Beer? It's glacier fresh and the number 1 selling beer in British Columbia.
5. What's Dieu du Ciel? It's one of the coolest microbreweries in Quebec with crazy, yummy, brews.
6. Remember, Trivia starts at 5pm. There will be a bonus trivia question on the night and only those who read this will know that the answer is "Rob Ford is Chris Farley".
7. Can we reserve tables for the dinner special? Yes, limited seats and you must be there by 6pm.Other than that, it's first come first serve.
9. Tips for avoiding the cover charge: show up before 7:00pm. If you can't make it early, make sure you dress "Canadian"! Putting on a red shirt isn't enough but a red shirt & white pants for example should work. Canadian University stuff is also acceptable but again, just showing up with a t-shirt won't convince the bouncers.

So...

Chicos,

~ We must stand with our Mexican neighbours and pay tribute not only to the 152nd anniversary of the heroic Battle of Pueblo, but to the nation that has blessed us with tequila, tacos and vague-but-blissful memories of our Reading Weeks/Spring Breaks.

~ We’re starting things off from 6pm with some fun & games, great drink specials and very authentic Mexican food.  The Mariachis will show up as will our beloved Latino DJ's Lavida and Locura (and friends) which is when the party really kicks into hyperdrive! ~

~ Make sure you wear a costume to avoid paying the higher cover charge. FYI, simply painting on a moustache isn't enough to count as a costume, you've got to make at least a bit of an effort.

About the Food
It's REAL MEXICAN FOOD!!!  No, we’re not joking.  We’ve actually got Mexican chef, Cisco, on the night making only authentic Mexican food.  Raised in California, he’s the first of his family born outside Mexico but he keeps the family tradition alive through his passion for Mexican food and culture.  In fact, most of the recipes on the night will be his late grandmother’s including hand-made corn tortillas which we'll be using for authentic tacos! Thanks in advance Cisco…you’re awesome and once again, you’ve already done your family proud.

Check back here or Facebook for any updates.

Let's do it again, por favor!

They're also adding a breakfast menu for us as well and some "North American" food, lunch deals and beer specials.

There's also a couple of free lucky door prize draws, one during half time and the other right after the game ends. Just ask for your free raffle ticket at any one of the bars. Game usually goes until around 2pm.

And for those who think that football has something to do with soccer, come and see Bruno Mars perform during the half-time show.

CANADA SHOWCASE
CANADIAN MUSIC COMES TO SYDNEY FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY!

What THREE AMAZING CANADIAN ACTS: Saidah Baba Talibah, Sidney York and The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer!
Dress However you want but check with venue for any restrictions

Note This is going to be a great night out! And a great way to check out what's been hapening on the Canadian music scene. All of these acts are fantastic. Saidah will definitely blow you away!

3 CANADIAN BANDS IN SYDNEY, ONE NIGHT ONLY

There’s Rock n’ Roll. And then there’s the Rock n’ Soul of buzzy Toronto-bred vocalist Saidah Baba Talibah, daughter of Tony and Grammy Award-nominated icon Salome Bey, “Canada’s First Lady of Blues”. Strong bloodline notwithstanding, Saidah is a fierce artist that isn’t afraid to combine rock/funk/soul in all of her performances.

“Part glitzy pop, part avant-pop, and part fun”, Sidney York began as the long-distance relationship of two former band geeks: opera singer Brandi Sidoryk and bassoonist Krista Wodelet. Joining forces to create an avant-pop renaissance of the unusual instruments they grew up with, Sidney York’s frontwomen deliver a live experience that rollercoasters from bubbly, clap-and-whistle-along pop to sweet and sexy vocal harmonies, and their powerful onstage presence always leaves audiences wanting more.

Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer are armed with a stack of harmonicas, a mess of foot percussion and a road-worn Telecaster. Shawn “The Harpoonist” Hall and Matthew “The Axe Murderer” Rogers kick out raw and primal blues; continuing in the tradition of a ‘decades-deep blues style’ (Scott Brown, What’s up Yukon), while electrifying the genre a with a lightning bolt of new life. Their sound pays homage to influences ranging from Robert Johnson to Jack White, but its smothered in greasy, gritty soul, and punched with funk.

Code One, CMW (Canadian Music Week), CIMA (Canadian Independent Music Association), Network Canada and The Canadian Consulate present this event which is set to be full of foot tapping, head bopping performances with the right amount of quirk, cheek and attitude ensuring that whatever music style you are loyal to is replaced by these new discoveries and you walk away with an array of feel good musical emotion that will last well into the weekend.

NFL SEASON OPENER
For Young Professionals

When 6pm til late, Friday, 6 September
Where Cheers Bar, 561 George St, Sydney CBD. The entire venue is ours!
What Fun crowd, great dinner menu and even a football (that's right, we call it football) game (Ravens vs Broncos)
Dress Casual or formal or anything in between or football jersey !
RSVPs Not required but really appreciated as space is limited.

One of our most popular smaller social events of the year, the defending champion Baltimore Ravens will take on their rival Denver Broncos in our 3rd annual and incredibly popular NFL Season Opener. You don't need to be a football fan...it's a great night to meet new people.

Wear a shirt of your favorite football team or anything that will tell people where you're from.

No spoilers please. If you know the result of the game, please don't tell anyone!

FAQ's
1. Are there vegetarian dinner options in the $20 dinner/drink deal? Yes, there'll be 5 or 6 dinner special options with at least one of them being full vegetarian (not vegan) and another involving fish.
2. What if we don’t want the dinner special? Then just come and party! Plus there’s heaps of other Canadian snacks from REAL poutine to perogies to pancakes to honey-dill chicken fingers.
3. Are there really Caesar’s? Yes but don’t expect them to last all night. We managed to import well over 100 litres of Clamato Juice! Sounds like a lot but not when there’s hundreds or even thousands of people!!! ALL Caesar's will be made to the traditional Canadian recipe and all bartenders have already been educated and trained in the art.
4. What’s Whistler Beer? Brewed in Whistler, Canada but owned by an Australian, a perfect fit for Network Canada.
5. What's Dieu du Ciel? It's one of the coolest microbreweries in Quebec.
6. Remember, Trivia starts at 5pm. There will be a bonus trivia question on the night and only those who read this will know that the answer is "Network Canada wants proof that Justin Beiber is Canadian".
7. Can we reserve tables for the dinner special? Yes, if you have a group + if it's before 7pm + you book online or by phone directly with The Argyle. But bookings are limited. Other than that, it's first come first serve. There's hundreds of seats but it's looking like a busy night so get in early to avoid disappointment.
8. Is there a door list? Nope. Just show up. We've hit capacity a few times in the past so the earlier you show up the better so not to avoid any line-ups (oops I mean queues).

View the OFFICIAL INVITE

CINCO DE MAYO is an honoured North American celebtration. It's a Mexican holiday that's actually becoming more popular in Canada & the US than it is in Mexico! As luck would have it, it also coincides with the greatest holiday ever celebrated outside of our Milky Way - MAY THE 4th BE WITH YOU! So once again we're combining the 2 to create a unique night that holds true to Mexican tradition while at the same time lets others get their Wookies on. So...

Chicos,

~ We must stand with our Mexican neighbours and pay tribute not only to the 151st anniversary of the heroic Battle of Pueblo, but to the nation that has blessed us with tequila, tacos and vague-but-blissful memories of our Reading Weeks/Spring Breaks.

~ We’re starting things off from 6pm with some fun & games, great drink specials and very authentic Mexican food.  The Mariachis will show up as will our beloved DJ Locura which is when the party really kicks into 2nd gear! ~

~ We're celebrating a day early which means it coincides with the official STAR WARS DAY (May the 4th be with you) so if you don't have any Mexicana in your closet, pull out the Wookie (that's not a euphemism)! Canadians be proud, according to Wikipedia "In 2011, the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema."

He did it for us last year and people are still talking about it!!!! Thanks in advance Cisco…you’re awesome and once again, you’ve already done your family proud.

Check back here or Facebook for any updates.

Let's do it again, por favor!

besame,

red de Canada

Some people call it Kick-Ball, others call it Soccer-Baseball, we call it a good excuse to get together for some fun. The stakes are high. We're playing for national pride here.

We've had some American young professionals (aged 24-35) in our network challenge the Canucks to a very friendly game of boozy kickball. In some drunken discussion, we decided that it should be a "triathalon" of "sports". As such...

There will be a Canada vs USA triathalon with the winning nation receiving honours. The 3 chosen sports (all coed) are:

1. Kickball/Soccer Baseball game - very coed, very fun. If you can catch while holding a beer, you're in!
2. Bean Bag Toss/Cornholing
3. Drinking games!?

It's also Thanksgiving weekend for Canadians so thought it would be a good way to fight those homesick blues. So we'll make it into a picnic as well...BYO food & drinks but there's also a food kiosk at the park in case you forget.

You can also RSVP via the Facebook page.

FAQ's
1. Are there vegetarian dinner options in the $20 dinner/drink deal? Yes, there are 6 dinner special options with one of them being full vegetarian (not vegan) and another involving fish.
2. What if we don’t want the dinner special? Then just come and party! Plus there’s heaps of other Canadian snacks from REAL poutine to pancakes to honey/dill chicken fingers.
3. Are there really Caesar’s? Yes but don’t expect them to last all night. We managed to import well over 100 litres of Clamato Juice! Sounds like a lot but not when there’s hundreds or even thousands of people!!!
4. What’s Whistler Beer? It's delicious. Brewed in Whistler, Canada but owned by an Australian, a perfect fit for Network Canada.
5. What's Dieu du Ciel? It's one of the coolest microbreweries in Quebec.
6. Remember, Trivia starts at 5pm. There will be a bonus trivia question on the night and only those who read this will know that the answer is "Network Canada throws a mean party ".
7. Can we reserve tables for the dinner special? Yes, if it's before 7pm and you book online or by phone directly with The Argyle.
9. Tips for avoiding the $10 cover charge: show up before 8:30pm is the easiest. If you can't make it early, make sure you dress "Canadian"! Putting on a red shirt isn't enough but a red shirt & white pants for example should work. Canadian University stuff is also acceptable but again, just showing up with a t-shirt won't convince the bouncers.

CINCO DE MAYO FIESTA

When Friday 4 May, 6:00pm til late
Where City Hotel (Upstairs to start), corner of King & Kent, Sydney CBD
What

Free entry, REAL Mexican Food specials, live Mariachis, Latino DJ, $6 Mexican beers, $5 tequila shots + awesome tequila bar thanks to our friends at Sauza, margaritas, pinatas, prizes, giveaways etc.  Everyone over 18 is welcome.

Dress Wear anything you like but prizes for best Mexican or Star Wars costumes (May the 4th be with you!)
No Cover Free Entry
RSVPs Not required but always appreciated

At Network Canada we love excuses to party, and because Canada Day isn’t coming up for a little while, we thought we’d go for another honoured North American celebration…CINCO DE MAYO. A Mexican holiday that's actually more popular in Canada & the US than it is in Mexico! So...

Chicos,

~Once again, we stand with our Mexican neighbours and pay tribute not only to the 150th anniversary of the heroic Battle of Pueblo, but to the nation that has blessed us with tequila, tacos and vague-but-blissful memories of our Reading Weeks/Spring Breaks.~

~ Miliones de gringos all across North America will celebrate of our proclaimed Mexican nacional holiday as an excuse to tip back a few margaritas or even partake in tequila body shots. We've got it easy here in Sydney...they go sky-diving every year to celebrate in Vancouver!~

~Last year’s event was awesome, but this year we’re REALLY taking it to another level.~

~We’re starting things off Upstairs at City Hotel from 6pm with some fun & games, great drink specials and very authentic Mexican food.  By 8pm or so, we’ll take over the entire bar (upstairs & downstairs) which is when the party kicks into 2nd gear!~

We're celebrating a day early which means that it coincides with the official STAR WARS DAY (May the 4th be with you) so if you don't have any Mexicana in your closet, pull out the Wookie (that's not a euphemism)! Canadians be proud, according to Wikipedia "In 2011, the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at the Toronto Underground Cinema."

Check back here or Facebook for any updates.

Let's do it again, por favor!

besame,

red de Canada

P.S. The first 5 people to email back saying "Network Canada throws awesome parties" all win double-passes to see the new French-Canadian movie masterpiece, Café de Flore at Dendy Cinemas all over.

Great Big Sea rocks!!! Nine albums, 17 years on the road, relentless tours, crazy shows...these 3 guys from Newfoundland have a huge cult following all over the world. This is their first Australian tour and they're stoked. From personal experience, these guys are INCREDIBLE in their live show. For those who truly love amazing music, check them out at the Byron Bay Bluesfest along with some other incredible acts.

The other day, I was lucky enough to have a phone call with Great Big Sea-man (hehehe...I said sea-man), Alan Doyle. He's a genuine guy with a genuine love for music & a genuine appreciation of (Canadian) music history. For all you music geeks out there he credits the Clancy Bros (who also profoundly influenced Bob Dylan) - as one of the band's biggest influences and you can certainly hear it in their harmonies).

Here's a direct quote from our chat:

"NEWFOUNDLANDERS & AUSTRALIANS - TWO OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST DRINKING & SINGING CULTURES - WILL TRULY MEET FOR THE FIRST TIME"

Alan & the rest of GBS are chuffed about their first Australian tour. While Alan has toured here before with his good friend, Russell Crowe, he admits that's it's taken GBS way too long to get here but promised they'll make up for the lost time.

HERE ARE THE 5 WINNERS OF THE GREAT BIG SEA POEM COMPETITION...

"From St John’s to Sydney"
Growin’ up on the “Rock”, there was music all ‘round
Rankin Street or Rose and Thistle is where the boys could be found
Energetic rock infused with folk became the signature sound
Alan Doyle, Sean McCan and Bob Hallett loved to plank ‘er down
The Irish Descendants opening act, the crowds they did astound

Bodhran, fiddle, mandolin and guitar, the music could be heard down town
International fame was eminent and there name became renown
Great Big Sea’s third album had a picture of a clown

Sea of no cares, I’se The B’y and What Are Ya’ At? Made us shake the ground
Every Newfie sang along and the screech they would pound
Australia now gets the chance to hear them ‘cause they are Byron Bay Bluesfest Bound

Great Big Sea in Australia? HOLY F@#K!
I can't believe my friggin' luck!
Been waiting years for them to tour here
and sing their songs about women, sailing and beer
Subjects any Aussie can easily get
This kitchen party will be the best one yet!
Seen them a dozen times in the homeland
But it's not enough to satiate my love for this band
Visited Newfoundland just to see St John's town
Went cod jiggin in Petty Habour and listened to George St sounds
I've been constantly tweeting Russell Crowe,
Saying "Bring your mates down, you've got the dough!"
Maybe the message finally got through
Hope they play Mari-Mac and Ordinary Day too.
We'll rant and we'll roar like true Canuncks
Great Big Sea in Melbourne? What luck!

by Suzanne
---

It will be the ‘End Of The World As We Know It’
If I should miss seeing them ‘Play’
There must be ‘Something to it’
It will be an extra ‘Ordinary day’
For ‘When I’m Up I Can’t Get Down’
‘I’m a Rover’ and ‘Everything Shines’
I’ll find a ‘Boat Like Gideon Brown’
And drink ‘Margaritas’ instead of wine.
So don’t have a ‘Heart of Stone’
I’m writing this “As Fast As I Can’
I ‘Don’t Wanna Go Home’
Don’t make me a ‘Little Beggarman’.
So I’m gonna ‘Beat the Drum’
Because I am ‘Buying Time’
I will ‘Hit The Ground and Run’
When those tickets are all mine….

by Linda

To the tune of Helmethead...

I was just in Sydney town, when I got that great email
I couldn't watch in ‘Couver, and my fists rang like a bell.
I've never won some tickets, and I want them very much,
but when it comes to Great Big Sea, I've had the worst of luck.

My first show I booked tickets, and waited for some weeks,
but a day before the concert, I was puking in the sink,
in Vancouver they sure rocked it, a great show I had missed -
I gave it to a good friend, for that I’m really pissed.

So choose me, fare thee well,
There's no time for delay,
You'll see me at the concert, even if I have to pay
So choose me, fare thee well,
I'm glad you shared my post,
You know I want these tickets so so so much more than most.

Hail to the 4 screamin' & screechin' Newfy lads.
Spreading the Celtic passion like fishermen gone mad!
Who toast to the east coast through their stories & song.
They have sung it all, from Victoria to St.John's!

No bar has been too big, and no drink too strong!
These are the 4 lads who bring it on!!!
No sea, no drink, no distance is too great.
For these are the lads who conquer and celebrate!
So raise a drink to Alan, Bob, Darrell, and Sean.
The band of merry musicians who tell their life through song!!!

This event usually attracts quite a big & fun crowd and our friends at the Brooklyn have given us the perfect venue for the game. It's right in the heart of the CBD plus they've got TV's throughout including a 12 foot giant screen in the main bar and a ginormous plasma in the outdoor, fully covered, courtyard.

Minors are welcome if accompanied by parent or guardian.

CINCO DE MAYO - Friday, 6 May 2011!
Cinco= Dos Coronas y Tres Cazadores Tequila Por Favor

Chicos,

First off, our last event was awesome...a small(ish) get together where approximately 300 very fun & beautiful people from Canada, USA, Australia and 10+ other countries shook it up. Special thanks to the late stayers who carried on poolside at Ivy for what ended up being quite a crazy time.

As the Network Canada name would suggest, we have a bit of a bias toward the Great White North (i.e. Canuckland, Canadia, etc). But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t follow the age-old principle of Love Thy Neighbor (hence the U.S. spelling of the word Neighbour)!

This time, however, we're not talking about our good Americano friends. This time, we’re talking about our other neighbor to the south, the one that gave us Tequila, burritos and completely soberless Reading Weeks/Spring Breaks…that’s right, we’re talkin bout MEXICO! You see, here at Network Canada we love excuses to party, and because Canada Day isn’t coming up for a little while, we thought we’d go for another honoured North American celebration…CINCO DE MAYO. In fact, this holiday is actually more popular in Canada & the US than it is in Mexico!

So, at precisely 6pm Friday May 6th it will be Cinco de Mayo in somewhere en Mexico y miliones de gringos all across the Americas will celebrate of our proclaimed Mexican nacional holiday as an excuse to tip back a few Margaritas et al. In remembrance of something that may have happened a long time ago in Mexico possibly involving a war or bullfight--we will drink in Sydney.

besame,

Jack doesn’t do a lot of speaking events but he’s a strong supporter of Network Canada and has been attending one or two of our events every year since it started. He’s a very switched on, warm and charming man but that won’t stop me from asking him some tough questions! For those of you who attended our first speaker session with head of CanWest Leonard Asper, you know what I mean.

If that’s not enough, the event is being sponsored by the Canadian icon, Canadian Club Whisky and together with the newly opened venue, The Kent Street Living Room, are providing some drink specials, great giveaways and nibblies. For those of you diehard Canadian beer drinkers, there’s a decent chance that the Moose will be Loose on the night! While we’ve had some amazing Canada parties over the years that continue to get bigger, these smaller parties (usually 200-300 people mainly within the 24-45 age range) are actually my favourite. By the way, there’s no dress code: a lot of people come from work and a bit more formal, others are in jeans and some even wear hockey jerseys!

Here’s how it works:  as usual no cover charge, the event is open to everyone (so don't just invite your Canadian friends). Show up (before 7pm if you want to see the chat with Jack Cowin), get your free raffle ticket, hope your number gets drawn and collect your prize. Prize draws  at ~8pm and ~9pm.

UPDATES: there may be some updates from time to time so check back here or on Facebook.

OLYMPIC ICE HOCKEY
Over 200 people came to watch Canada vs USA on Monday and many asked for us to find a more permanent home for Olympic hockey games...

James Squire Brewhouse on King Street Wharf is our home for the rest of the Olympics. The VERY friendly people there have agreed to show ALL the big hockey games in their entirety until the bitter end. They’ll even open at 7am for the early games. They’ve got great food and even greater drinks! They're also giving us a semi-secluded area, full volume and giant screen TV's - it's almost like being there (people will even spill beer on you if you ask nicely). We’ll be inside, down a few stairs at the back and right in front of the big screen TV. As always, everyone is welcome. Details on Facebook.

UPCOMING GAMES THAT WILL BE SCREENED

  • Fri, 26 Feb, 10:30am - Women's gold medal match. Canada vs USA
  • SAT, 27 FEB, 1:30PM - CANADA in the men's semi finals. Expecting a large crowd for this one
  • Sun, 28 Feb, 2:00pm - Bronze medal match (better not be Canada!)
  • MON, 1 MARCH, 7:00AM - GOLD MEDAL MATCH. If it's Canada vs USA then you may want to think about taing the rest of the day off. If Canada wins we'll party all day, if Canada loses you'll need to go home and cry.

Special thanks to our gracious American friends who helped us find the venue (and who didn’t rub in their victory over us on Monday! RSVPs not necessary but always appreciated.  See you at the hockey! Jonathan & the team at Network Canada

Party-MOVIE-Party in support of Audrey's Wish!
THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!

This event is to raise awareness and a bit of money for an amazing person…Audrey.  Last week, a Network Canada regular called me to tell me about Audrey. In March, Audrey Myrden was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive terminal brain tumour. Audrey is 42 and has lived in Manly NSW since 1998. She runs her own environmentally friendly cleaning business and has 3 small children (all under 7). Audrey and her husband Barry are originally from Canada, so they have no immediate family here in Australia for moral or financial support. What makes her situation worse is that she’s already fought and won a battle with Breast Cancer at the age of 27.  This 2nd cancer is totally unrelated to the 1st but because of her previous illness, she’s been unable to obtain any form of life or income protection insurance. Moreover, because of the short timeline, Audrey’s Wish has not yet been able to attain tax deductible charitable status adding further difficulty to Audrey’s plight to help her family.

Simply put, Audrey doesn’t have a lot of options and we need to help. That’s why we’re having a night at the Canadian Film Festival for a special screening of the movie "ONE WEEK":

Date:     Friday, 21 August 2009
Place:    Dendy Opera Quays, Circular Quay, Sydney (very close to the Opera House)
Time:     5:00pm reception. 6:30pm movie. 8:30pm after-party by the swimming pool at Ivy!
Cost:     $20 per ticket, includes free drink at private reception, nibblies, lucky prize draw. First 100 tix purchased also get free pair of C.C. earphones valued at approx. $10. Payment details below.
Note:    Tickets limited to the first 160 people. After-party at Ivy for movie ticket-holders only.

Not only is it for a good cause, it’s actually good value thanks to our sponsors:

The Festivalists
Canadian Club Whisky
Teton Gravity Research
Mumu Grill - Sustainable and Organic Steak House

Tickets to the Festival are normally $12. For the additional $8 (all of which is going to provide immediate financial support to Audrey’s family for the very difficult months ahead) you get a free drink and some nibblies at a private Network Canada reception and a chance to win one of three prizes in our lucky draw…and most importantly, you get to support Audrey! The first 100 people to book also get a free set of Canadian Club earphones valued at approx $10.

Booking Tickets ($20 each)

  1. Purchase online from Audrey’s Wish website. As you are entering your payment details, you will notice a link that says "Send a message to seller" (which is in PayPal). In the message write your name and how many tickets you purchased “e.g. John Smith 4 tix”. Just show up on the night and collect your tickets. All tickets will be in the name of the payee.
  2. Go to Adventure Megastore, 505 Kent Street, Sydney CBD
  3. Go to Chargrill Charlies, Shp3/ 4-8 Waters La, Neutral Bay

See you August 21st!

FAQ's
1. Are there vegetarian dinner options in the $15 dinner/drink/ticket deal?  Yes, there are 7 dinner special options with 2.5 of them being vegetarian (the 0.5 involves salmon)
2. What if we don’t want the dinner special?  Then just come and party or from 4:30-10pm there’s heaps of other Canadian snacks from poutine to pancakes to honey/dill chicken fingers to quesadillas.
3. Will you be showing the Australia vs. France rugby game? Yes BUT the game will be shown ONLY in the upstairs “Maple Leaf Lounge”… so the rest of us can keep partying Canadian style all night!!
4. How does the free ice hockey ticket work? With the $15 dinner special, you also get a ticket that’s valid for any Ice Dogs home game this season (there’ll be about 5 games left). Check out their schedule at http://www.icedogs.com.au. FYI, there are only 300 hockey tickets available for the dinner special so it's first come first serve!!!

6. What’s the connection between Bondi Blonde and Canada Parties? Bondi Blonde was invented by a fellow Canadian and Network Canada regular. Thanks Dean!
7. Trivia starts at 5pm. There will be a bonus trivia question on the night and only those who read this will know that the answer is "Network Canada".

CANADA PARTY - 27 March, 2009 at Roofbar sponsored by 1300 FLOWERS
With Halloween, New Year's Eve and Leonard Asper's special visit, we actually haven't had a proper down-to-earth-old-school-Canada Party in a very long time. So it's time to get back those events where everyone meets everyone, way they used to be! And with the world currently in such a confused state, now is the time to get on the front foot and do 2 things: meet new people and have some fun!!!!!

And what better way to do both than with a Canada Party. Particularly since this party has one of the happiest sponsors ever... 1300 FLOWERS. You've probably seen their clever ads on TV with Pat Rafter. Anyway, I've used them quite a few times particularly since they're not just about flowers...they've also got chocolates, gift baskets, stuffed animals, etc. The best thing about them, it’s impossible to forget their phone number!!

So here's how it works... as usual, there’s no cover charge, the parties are open to everyone (so don’t just bring your Canadian friends) and we’ve got a free raffle on the night. Show up, get your free raffle ticket, hope your number gets drawn and collect your prize! There are 10 prizes worth a total of $1,000, 5 will be drawn at approx 8:00pm and 5 more at approx 9:00pm.

There will also be Kokanee Beer on special behind the bar for $5.50 and free nibblies.

Date:    FRIDAY, 27 March 2009
Time:    6pm til whenever (about 30 of us went until 4am after the Leonard Asper event)
Venue: ROOFBAR, Sydney (Level 4, Skygarden, Pitt St Mall or 77 Castlereagh St. A hidden oasis!)
Note:    look for the Canadian flag

RSVP’s aren’t necessary but are always appreciated.

Please spread the word.  See you on March 27th!

MEET A CANADIAN BUSINESS ICON…SPONSORED BY A SYDNEY ICON, 19 DECEMBER 2008
Leonard Asper is one of Canada’s most prominent business people. As CEO of CanWest Global Communications (one of Canada’s largest media businesses encompassing Global Television and the National Post & majority shareholder of TEN Network here in Australia), Leonard has a unique and global perspective on the business of media. Much more importantly, he’s a great guy and has very kindly offered to join us for some after-work professional networking & fun!

If that’s not enough, the event being sponsored by Chophouse Restaurant & Bar (the same operators as the famous Kingsley’s) Sydney’s newest restaurant in the iconic Bligh St Chambers. For those true carnivores out there, Chophouse is one of only two restaurants in Australia with a specially imported grill from the USA (it heats to over 1500 degrees and seals the flavour in to perfection). I’ve personally been there 3 times since it opened a few weeks ago and it’s the best steakhouse in Sydney! There won’t be steak on the night but there will be some nibblies.

Our friends Canadian Club Whisky  and Lloyd Morgan are also proudly sponsoring the event.

Here’s how it works:  as usual no cover charge, the event is open to everyone (except the Press) but this time you need to RSVP. If you’re not on the guest list, you’re unlikely to get in due to capacity issues and there’s a limit of 250. And thanks to Chophouse & Canadian Club, we’ve got a free raffle on the night. Show up, get your free raffle ticket, hope your number gets drawn and collect either your prize. There are 10 prizes worth over $1,000, 5 will be drawn at ~8pm and 5 more at ~9pm.

On top of this, the first 100 C.C. & Ginger or C.C. & Cokes are very kindly being donated by Lloyd Morgan …first come, first serve! Details below

When:  6pm – 10+pm, 19 December, 2008 (some of us will be kicking on afterwards somewhere)
Where: Chophouse, 25 Bligh St, Sydney CBD (look for the Canadian flag!)
RSVP: by reply email  no later than 10 December

Please spread the word!

Jonathan & the Network Canada Team

P.S. If you know someone who would like to be added to this list, tell them to email me.  If you’re sick of hearing from us, just send me an email saying “Get lost you crazy Canuck” and you’ll be removed from the list.
