Note 7 til 7:30pm: fireside chat and Q&A with Australian business legend Jack Cowin
  Absolutely everyone welcome

Jack Cowin is one of Australia’s most prominent business people...and he’s Canadian! As the founder of Hungry Jacks and the man who brought KFC to Australia over 40 years ago, he’s known as Australia’s father of fast food. Jack’s portfolio has diversified beyond food over the years and includes or has included Bridgeclimb, Stanbroke Pastoral, Torbreck Wines, Network Ten, food manufacturing businesses and others. He’s also a Director of the TEN television network and of the Sydney Olmypic Park Authority as well as a long-time member of the BRW Rich 200. Jack was born in Windsor, Ontario and is a University of Western Ontario grad.

As the second of Network Canada's "Speaker Sessions", we'll be having a brief "fireside" chat with Jack including Q&A from 7:00pm til 7:30pm. Before & after that, it's all about everyone meeting everyone and having fun! Jack doesn’t do a lot of speaking events but he’s a strong supporter of Network Canada and has been attending one or two of our events every year since it started. He’s a very switched on, warm and charming man but that won’t stop me from asking him some tough questions! For those of you who attended our first speaker session with head of CanWest Leonard Asper, you know what I mean.

If that’s not enough, the event is being sponsored by the Canadian icon, Canadian Club Whisky and together with the newly opened venue, The Kent Street Living Room, are providing some drink specials, great giveaways and nibblies. For those of you diehard Canadian beer drinkers, there’s a decent chance that the Moose will be Loose on the night! While we’ve had some amazing Canada parties over the years that continue to get bigger, these smaller parties (usually 200-300 people mainly within the 24-45 age range) are actually my favourite. By the way, there’s no dress code: a lot of people come from work and a bit more formal, others are in jeans and some even wear hockey jerseys!

Here’s how it works:  as usual no cover charge, the event is open to everyone (so don't just invite your Canadian friends). Show up (before 7pm if you want to see the chat with Jack Cowin), get your free raffle ticket, hope your number gets drawn and collect your prize. Prize draws  at ~8pm and ~9pm.

UPDATES: there may be some updates from time to time so check back here or on Facebook.

OLYMPIC ICE HOCKEY NOW HAS A HOME IN THE CBD
Over 200 people came to watch Canada vs USA on Monday and many asked for us to find a more permanent home for Olympic hockey games...

James Squire Brewhouse on King Street Wharf is our home for the rest of the Olympics. The VERY friendly people there have agreed to show ALL the big hockey games in their entirety until the bitter end. They’ll even open at 7am for the early games. They’ve got great food and even greater drinks! They're also giving us a smei-secluded area, full volume and a GIANT screen TV's - it's almost like being there (people will even spill beer on you if you ask nicely). We’ll be inside, down a few stairs at the bacl and right in front of the super giant screen TV. As always, everyone is welcome. Details on Facebook.

UPCOMING GAMES THAT WILL BE SCREENED

  • Fri, 26 Feb, 10:30am - Women's gold medal match. Canada vs USA
  • SAT, 27 FEB, 1:30PM - CANADA in the men's semi finals. Expecting a large crowd for this one
  • Sun, 28 Feb, 2:00pm - Bronze medal match (better not be Canada!)
  • MON, 1 MARCH, 7:00AM - GOLD MEDAL MATCH. If it's Canada vs USA then you may want to think about taing the rest of the day off. If Canada wins we'll party all day, if Canada loses you'll need to go home and cry.

Special thanks to our gracious American friends who helped us find the venue (and who didn’t rub in their victory over us on Monday! RSVPs not necessary but always appreciated.  See you at the hockey! Jonathan & the team at Network Canada

Party-MOVIE-Party in support of Audrey's Wish!
THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT!

This event is to raise awareness and a bit of money for an amazing person…Audrey.  Last week, a Network Canada regular called me to tell me about Audrey. In March, Audrey Myrden was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive terminal brain tumour. Audrey is 42 and has lived in Manly NSW since 1998. She runs her own environmentally friendly cleaning business and has 3 small children (all under 7). Audrey and her husband Barry are originally from Canada, so they have no immediate family here in Australia for moral or financial support. What makes her situation worse is that she’s already fought and won a battle with Breast Cancer at the age of 27.  This 2nd cancer is totally unrelated to the 1st but because of her previous illness, she’s been unable to obtain any form of life or income protection insurance. Moreover, because of the short timeline, Audrey’s Wish has not yet been able to attain tax deductible charitable status adding further difficulty to Audrey’s plight to help her family.

Simply put, Audrey doesn’t have a lot of options and we need to help. That’s why we’re having a night at the Canadian Film Festival for a special screening of the movie "ONE WEEK":

Date:     Friday, 21 August 2009
Place:    Dendy Opera Quays, Circular Quay, Sydney (very close to the Opera House)
Time:     5:00pm reception. 6:30pm movie. 8:30pm after-party by the swimming pool at Ivy!
Cost:     $20 per ticket, includes free drink at private reception, nibblies, lucky prize draw. First 100 tix purchased also get free pair of C.C. earphones valued at approx. $10. Payment details below.
Note:    Tickets limited to the first 160 people. After-party at Ivy for movie ticket-holders only.

Not only is it for a good cause, it’s actually good value thanks to our sponsors:

The Festivalists
Canadian Club Whisky
Teton Gravity Research
Mumu Grill - Sustainable and Organic Steak House

Tickets to the Festival are normally $12. For the additional $8 (all of which is going to provide immediate financial support to Audrey’s family for the very difficult months ahead) you get a free drink and some nibblies at a private Network Canada reception and a chance to win one of three prizes in our lucky draw…and most importantly, you get to support Audrey! The first 100 people to book also get a free set of Canadian Club earphones valued at approx $10.

Booking Tickets ($20 each)

  1. Purchase online from Audrey’s Wish website. As you are entering your payment details, you will notice a link that says "Send a message to seller" (which is in PayPal). In the message write your name and how many tickets you purchased “e.g. John Smith 4 tix”. Just show up on the night and collect your tickets. All tickets will be in the name of the payee.
  2. Go to Adventure Megastore, 505 Kent Street, Sydney CBD
  3. Go to Chargrill Charlies, Shp3/ 4-8 Waters La, Neutral Bay

See you August 21st!

CANADA PARTY - 27 March, 2009 at Roofbar sponsored by 1300 FLOWERS
With Halloween, New Year's Eve and Leonard Asper's special visit, we actually haven't had a proper down-to-earth-old-school-Canada Party in a very long time. So it's time to get back those events where everyone meets everyone, way they used to be! And with the world currently in such a confused state, now is the time to get on the front foot and do 2 things: meet new people and have some fun!!!!!

And what better way to do both than with a Canada Party. Particularly since this party has one of the happiest sponsors ever... 1300 FLOWERS. You've probably seen their clever ads on TV with Pat Rafter. Anyway, I've used them quite a few times particularly since they're not just about flowers...they've also got chocolates, gift baskets, stuffed animals, etc. The best thing about them, it’s impossible to forget their phone number!!

So here's how it works... as usual, there’s no cover charge, the parties are open to everyone (so don’t just bring your Canadian friends) and we’ve got a free raffle on the night. Show up, get your free raffle ticket, hope your number gets drawn and collect your prize! There are 10 prizes worth a total of $1,000, 5 will be drawn at approx 8:00pm and 5 more at approx 9:00pm.

There will also be Kokanee Beer on special behind the bar for $5.50 and free nibblies.

Date:    FRIDAY, 27 March 2009
Time:    6pm til whenever (about 30 of us went until 4am after the Leonard Asper event)
Venue: ROOFBAR, Sydney (Level 4, Skygarden, Pitt St Mall or 77 Castlereagh St. A hidden oasis!)
Note:    look for the Canadian flag

RSVP’s aren’t necessary but are always appreciated.

Please spread the word.  See you on March 27th!

MEET A CANADIAN BUSINESS ICON…SPONSORED BY A SYDNEY ICON, 19 DECEMBER 2008
Leonard Asper is one of Canada’s most prominent business people. As CEO of CanWest Global Communications (one of Canada’s largest media businesses encompassing Global Television and the National Post & majority shareholder of TEN Network here in Australia), Leonard has a unique and global perspective on the business of media. Much more importantly, he’s a great guy and has very kindly offered to join us for some after-work professional networking & fun!

If that’s not enough, the event being sponsored by Chophouse Restaurant & Bar (the same operators as the famous Kingsley’s) Sydney’s newest restaurant in the iconic Bligh St Chambers. For those true carnivores out there, Chophouse is one of only two restaurants in Australia with a specially imported grill from the USA (it heats to over 1500 degrees and seals the flavour in to perfection). I’ve personally been there 3 times since it opened a few weeks ago and it’s the best steakhouse in Sydney! There won’t be steak on the night but there will be some nibblies.

Our friends Canadian Club Whisky  and Lloyd Morgan are also proudly sponsoring the event.

Here’s how it works:  as usual no cover charge, the event is open to everyone (except the Press) but this time you need to RSVP. If you’re not on the guest list, you’re unlikely to get in due to capacity issues and there’s a limit of 250. And thanks to Chophouse & Canadian Club, we’ve got a free raffle on the night. Show up, get your free raffle ticket, hope your number gets drawn and collect either your prize. There are 10 prizes worth over $1,000, 5 will be drawn at ~8pm and 5 more at ~9pm.

On top of this, the first 100 C.C. & Ginger or C.C. & Cokes are very kindly being donated by Lloyd Morgan …first come, first serve! Details below

When:  6pm – 10+pm, 19 December, 2008 (some of us will be kicking on afterwards somewhere)
Where: Chophouse, 25 Bligh St, Sydney CBD (look for the Canadian flag!)
RSVP: by reply email  no later than 10 December

Please spread the word!
